Minimum System Requirements

Hardware Requirements

Ornatrix heavily relies on your system's CPU, GPU, and RAM to model, simulate, and render millions of high-fidelity hair strands. For optimal performance, we recommend using a modern CPU with a high core count and high clock frequencies, paired with at least 32 GB of RAM.

Windows

Mac

  • Mac OS 13 Ventura or newer
  • Maya 2024 or newer.

Linux

  • A Linux distribution from the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 family is required.
  • Maya 2022 or newer.

Known Issues and Limitations

  • Dynamics Node
The Dynamics operator has been deprecated and is not supported on macOS. Please use the Moov Hair Physics node as an alternative.
  • Maya 2025
Starting on Maya 2025, the Expression Editor widget is no longer included. The plain text Expression Editor is still available for adding and editing SeExpr scripts.

Viewport Hair Display Limitations on Mac OS

The version of OpenGL included with macOS lacks support for compute shaders and other essential features required by Ornatrix for optimal viewport hair display. Due to this limitation, the following Ornatrix features are not available when using macOS:

  • GPU Hair Display
The ability to leverage GPU for hair display in the viewport.
  • Camera-facing Hair
Hair strands dynamically aligning with the camera view.
  • Camera-facing Normals
Strand normals dynamically aligning with the camera view.
  • Display Strand Selection
Displaying strand selection directly on the Hair Shape node. This does not apply to Edit Guides.
  • Display Strand Groups
Displaying of strand groups colors directly on the Hair Shape node when Edit Guides is not selected.
  • Overlay Opacity and Overlay Blend Mode
Since none of the Overlay features are supported, these options will not have any effect.
  • Display Wireframe when selected
Allows you to disable the selection highlight of the hair in the viewport.
  • Display Strand Channel Overlay
Allows you to display the values of the selected strand channel.
  • Maya LT
Maya LT does not support third party plugins. You can find more information in Maya LT Documentation*

Arnold Compatibility

This is a list of the MtoA (Maya to Arnold translator) versions that Ornatrix Arnold translator was built against and are supposed to properly render Ornatrix hair:

Maya Version MtoA Version supported by Ornatrix
2016, 2016.5 3.1
2017 3.3
2018 4.2
2019 5.1
2020 5.2
2022 5.3
2023 5.4
2024-2026 5.5

The first and second MtoA version number must match the one Ornatrix was built against, otherwise the translator won't work. The remaining numbers may be different.
For example, in Maya 2019 Ornatrix will work with any MtoA 5.1.x version, but won't work with any of the 5.0.x or 5.2.x versions.

Ornatrix tries to support the latest published version of MtoA. This may be newer than the version that comes with Maya, so you may need to install the latest one from Autodesk.
Whenever you upgrade to the latest Ornatrix version and you find that hair no longer renders in Arnold, check for a newer MtoA version at https://manage.autodesk.com/products

It is possible to check which version of MtoA is Ornatrix linked to by inspecting the contents of the plug-ins\extensions directory under the Ornatrix installation root (usually C:\Program Files\Ephere\OrnatrixMaya20xx). If there is a file named for example OrnatrixTranslator52.dll then the required MtoA version is 5.2.
