About Ornatrix App
Ornatrix App is the standalone version of Ornatrix - a complete hair, fur, and feather grooming application that runs on its own, without a host 3D program such as Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3ds Max, or Maxon Cinema 4D.
It is built on the same Ornatrix grooming engine used by the plugin versions, so the operators, tools, and concepts you learn here carry directly across to every other Ornatrix product. What the App adds is a dedicated, purpose-built environment for hair work: a real-time GPU viewport, an operator-based grooming pipeline, and built-in interchange with the rest of your studio.
What you can do with it
- Import mesh geometry (Alembic, USD, OBJ) and grow hair, fur, or feathers on it.
- Build grooms procedurally with a stack of operators - non-destructive, re-orderable steps such as Guides from Mesh, Hair from Guides, Frizz, Clump, and Curl.
- Sculpt and refine guides interactively with brush-based grooming tools.
- Preview your work with physically based rendering using AMD Radeon ProRender.
- Export finished hair to Alembic or USD for rendering and look development in your main pipeline, or save self-contained groom files to reuse and share.
- Automate and extend the application with the built-in Python console.
How it differs from the plugins
The plugin versions of Ornatrix live inside a host application and borrow its viewport, scene, and file handling. The App provides all of that itself:
- Its own real-time Vulkan viewport, with orthographic and perspective views, multiple camera support, and optional multi-window layouts.
- Its own portable groom file format (
.oxz), which stores the entire working session - imported geometry references, the operator stack, cameras, and settings - and can optionally embed referenced assets so a groom is self-contained and easy to share. - A complete, dockable workspace built around the Operator Stack, the Node Graph, the Timeline, and the property editors.
- A localized interface, available in several languages.
Because the grooming engine is shared, a groom authored in the App can be loaded by the Maya, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, and Unreal Engine versions of Ornatrix, and the reverse is also true. The App works on one groom at a time, which is your document: you create it, save it, and reopen it much as you would a document in any other application.
