Multiple Viewports
Ornatrix App can show several viewports at once, for example a perspective view next to top, front and left views. Each viewport is a panel of its own that you can dock, tab or float like any other panel, and each one has its own camera, display mode, grid and background.
Adding viewports
- Choose View > New Viewport to open a new viewport as a tab next to the active one.
- Right click the empty part of any panel's tab bar, to the right of its tabs, and choose New Viewport to open one as a tab in that panel group.
- Choose View > Viewport Layout to arrange viewports in the area of the first one: Two puts a top view beside it, Four adds top, front and left views with the first viewport in the bottom right corner, and Single goes back to one viewport.
A new viewport looks through the next of the top, front and left views. Its tab is named after the view it shows, such as Top, or after the camera it looks through, and follows it when you switch views. Close an added viewport's tab to remove it. You can have up to 16 viewports.
The active viewport
Keyboard shortcuts, the View menu and scripts act on the active viewport. Clicking a viewport, panning it with the middle mouse button or rolling the mouse wheel over it makes it the active one. The shortcut hints are shown in the active viewport.
Shared views
Two viewports showing the same view, for example two Perspective viewports, look through the same camera, so moving one moves the other. Choose a different view in one of them to look elsewhere. The viewport lights are shared by all viewports.
Raytraced and Realistic display modes
The raytraced renderers draw one viewport at a time: the one last switched to the Raytraced or Realistic display mode, or a raytraced viewport you click. Another viewport in one of these modes shows the shaded geometry with a note, until you click it.
Saved layouts
The viewports are saved with the window layout, so a saved layout, the layout restored on startup and the layout saved with a groom all bring back their viewports with their views and display modes. Layouts saved before there were several viewports open with a single viewport.
Performance
Each viewport draws the scene again, so four viewports showing a dense groom take about four times as long to draw as one. While you navigate one viewport, the others are not drawn again unless what they show changes.
