Change Width Operator
The Change Width operator sets the thickness of strands. It writes the width values stored on the hair directly, so the thickness you set is consistent across operators, the viewport, preview rendering, and any renderer you export to. Width can be uniform, or vary along strands and across the surface using a profile, a map, or a strand channel.
Controlling width
- Set an overall width for the affected strands.
- Use a profile to taper strands along their length - for example thick at the root and fine at the tip, as real hair is.
- Drive the width with a map or channel to vary thickness across the groom.
A strand group parameter lets you apply different widths to different parts of a groom - thin body fur and thicker whiskers, for instance.
Width and meshing
Change Width is important when converting hair into surface geometry: Rendering Hair as Mesh Geometry uses the strand width to decide how thick the generated mesh is. Place Change Width below Mesh from Strands so the width is defined before the mesh is built.
