Clump Tools

The clump tools edit the clumps of a Clump Operator by hand in the viewport. They sit together on the Clump tab of the main toolbar, where the number keys 1 to 4 select them:

  • Clump Hairs - select hairs to form clumps of them or take them out of their clumps. See Clumping selected hairs.
  • Transform Clumps - move, rotate and scale the selected clumps with the transform gizmo, override their amount and twist, and shape the cross-sections of Volume clumps.
  • Clump Patterns - give the selected clumps braid patterns. See Braid Patterns.
  • Clump Ornaments - add hair ties and ribbons to the selected Volume clumps.

Activating a clump tool on hair which has no Clump operator in its stack adds one on top of it. When the stack already has a Clump operator, the tool edits that one.

Working with the clump tools

All four tools edit the same clumps, so switching between them keeps what you are working on: the selected clumps, the edit position along them and the selected knots. Click a clump in the viewport to select it, or drag a rectangle, circle or lasso to select several. Click a knot or drag along the cage of a selected clump to move the edit position, and drag the round knot handle to slide the selected knots along their clumps (Shift+drag slides copies of them).

Each tool shows its own settings in the Tool Properties panel, followed by the groups the tools share:

  • Sub-Clumping - Setup Procedural Sub-Clumps splits each clump into smaller ones. It makes the Clump operator output its clump indices as a channel and adds a Clump operator named Sub-Clumps above it, which uses that channel as its region and generates at least three times as many clumps with Dynamic Clumping, so that no sub-clump takes hairs of two clumps. The new operator is selected for editing, and one Undo takes the whole setup back.
  • Copy - copy the data of the first selected clump to the clipboard and paste it onto other clumps (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V), with options choosing which parts are copied.
  • Selection - Ignore Occluded, on by default, leaves out clumps hidden behind other objects.
  • Display - Clump Colors draws the strands in the colors of their clumps, and the cage options choose which curves of the selected clumps are shown.

These settings are the same in all of the clump tools.

The Clump Hairs and Clump Patterns tools have no transform gizmo, so picking Translate, Rotate or Scale (W, E, R) in them switches to the Transform Clumps tool. In the Clump Ornaments tool, Rotate turns the selected ornaments around their clumps and Scale squeezes the clumps under them.

Common actions

Unclump Shift+C Takes the selected hairs out of their clumps in the Clump Hairs tool, otherwise removes the selected clumps
