Holding and Fetching Grooms
Hold and Fetch let you quickly stash the current groom and bring it back later, without saving and reopening a file. This is handy when you want to try a direction but keep a safe point to return to. Ornatrix App keeps up to nine held grooms at once, each in a numbered slot.
Holding a groom
Press Hold (Ctrl+Alt+H) to stash the current groom in the current slot. Ornatrix App saves a temporary copy aside, leaving your working groom untouched so you can keep experimenting. The current slot is the one you last held into or fetched from, slot 1 to begin with.
Fetching a groom
Press Fetch (Ctrl+Alt+F) to restore the groom held in the current slot, replacing the current one. This brings you back to the exact state you held.
Choosing a slot
Keep the Hold or Fetch shortcut down for a second and the slot picker comes up: a grid of the nine slots, each showing the viewport as it was when its groom was held, and when that was. While you still hold Ctrl and Alt:
- Press H (F for Fetch) again to move to the next slot.
- Use the arrow keys to move across the grid, or press 1 to 9 to pick a slot.
- Click a slot to select it, or click the x in its corner to delete the groom held there.
- Press Escape, right-click, or click the x at the top of the picker to cancel.
Let go of all the keys to hold into, or fetch from, the selected slot, which then becomes the current slot. Fetch skips empty slots. The File menu's Hold and Fetch entries use the current slot.
Each held groom carries a quick copy of the viewport as its thumbnail. To have Hold render the thumbnail the way saving does, turn on Render the thumbnail when holding a groom in Settings and Preferences.
When to use it
Hold and Fetch is a lightweight, in-the-moment safety net, complementing - not replacing - normal undo and saving:
- Hold before a risky change, so you can Fetch back if it does not work out.
- Hold a promising version, explore an alternative, and Fetch the held version if you prefer it.
